Sometimes the simplest materials create the most memorable childhood play experiences.

What began with a few saved eggshells, homemade oobleck, and colorful popping pearls quickly turned into an afternoon of messy outdoor fun. After carefully creating their sensory eggs, the children eagerly cracked them open, squished the gooey fillings between their fingers, and mixed everything together into a giant batch of pretend “egg soup” in the mud kitchen.

This open-ended activity combines sensory exploration, imaginative play, and hands-on learning—all with materials many families already have at home.

Meet This Week’s Play Expert

This activity was shared by a passionate sensory play creator, Marina, who loves transforming simple household materials into engaging mud kitchen play experiences. Through creative sensory activities, she encourages children to explore textures, experiment with materials, and follow their own curiosity through play.

What Are Sensory Eggs?

Sensory Eggs are eggs filled with a soft oobleck mixture and colorful popping pearls. Children help create the eggs before bringing them into the mud kitchen, where they can crack, squeeze, mix, and transform them into all kinds of imaginative recipes.

The activity combines science, sensory exploration, and pretend play in a way that feels completely natural to children.

Materials You’ll Need

● Saved eggshells
● Cornstarch
● Water
● Popping pearls
● Syringe or dropper
● Bowl for mixing

How to Make Sensory Eggs

Step 1: Create the “Egg White”

Mix cornstarch and water together to create oobleck.

Oobleck is a fascinating sensory material because it behaves like both a liquid and a solid. It slowly flows through your fingers when handled gently but feels firm when squeezed. This unique texture makes it a favorite among children and provides a rich sensory experience from the very beginning of the activity.

This mixture will become the “egg white” inside the sensory eggs.

Step 2: Prepare the “Egg Yolk”

Use popping pearls as the egg yolk.

The bright yellow color and squishy texture add an exciting sensory element and create a fun surprise when the eggs are eventually cracked open.

Step 3: Fill the Eggshells

Using a syringe or dropper, carefully draw up the oobleck mixture and inject it into each eggshell.

Fill each shell to about two-thirds full. This step is a wonderful opportunity for children to practice hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while participating in the creation process.

Step 4: Add the Egg Yolk

Place one popping pearl into each egg to create the “egg yolk.”

Each egg becomes a unique creation, and children often enjoy showing their yellow eggs before moving on to play.

Step 5: Take the Eggs to the Mud Kitchen

Now comes the most exciting part.

Bring the sensory eggs outdoors and invite children to use them in their mud kitchen play.

Some children may carefully crack the eggs into bowls. Others may immediately squish the oobleck between their fingers to explore its unusual texture. In this play session, the sensory eggs naturally turned into a giant batch of pretend egg soup as the children mixed, stirred, and experimented with their ingredients.

The activity naturally evolved beyond the original idea, becoming entirely child-led.

What Children Are Learning Through Play

While children are simply having fun, they are also developing important skills along the way:

● Fine Motor Development
● Sensory Awareness
● Scientific Curiosity
● Creativity and Imagination
● Problem-Solving Skills

Final Thoughts

Sometimes the best play invitations start with everyday materials and a little creativity.

With saved eggshells, homemade oobleck, popping pearls, and plenty of imagination, Sensory Eggs become more than a sensory activity—they become an opportunity to explore, experiment, create, and discover.

And as this mud kitchen adventure showed, you never quite know where children’s imaginations will take them next.
